On this week’s NCAA Roundup, presented by Johnston Meier Insurance, we take a closer look at the six BCHL alumni that earned weekly conference awards earlier this week.
NCHC Forward of the Week
Brett Stapley – Senior – University of Denver (Vernon Vipers)
Stapley had a huge weekend to power Denver to a sweep of Arizona State, racking up six points in the series, including his second and third multi-point games of the season. On Friday, the Montreal Canadiens draft pick recorded his first career hat trick and added the primary assist on the game-winning goal for a career-high four points. The senior was back at it on Saturday with another goal and assist, tallying DU’s third goal in a 7-1 victory and again setting up the game-winner.
Stapley played three seasons with the Vipers from 2015 to 2018. He played in 154 regular-season games over his career, collecting 121 points on 47 goals and 74 assists.
Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week
Willie Reim – Junior – Air Force Academy (West Kelowna Warriors)
Reim tied a pair of career highs with two goals and three points in the Falcons 5-2 win over Canisius on Friday. The North Oaks, Minn. native scored a power-play goal in the third period for a 4-2 lead and then sealed the win with an empty-net tally. Reim also assisted on Air Force’s second goal to tie the game at 2-2 and had a game-high seven shots on goal. On Saturday, he scored the first goal of the contest, marking just the fourth time the Falcons opened the scoring in 16 games this season.
The 22-year-old played two seasons with the West Kelowna Warriors from 2017 to 2019. He finished in the top-20 in league scoring his final year when he notched 58 points in 57 games.
This is Reim’s second weekly conference award of the season.
Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week
Evan DeBrouwer – Graduate – Bentley University (Nanaimo/Prince George)
DeBrouwer backstopped the Falcons to a sweep of Mercyhurst to extend Bentley’s winning streak to five games, all of which came with DeBrouwer in net. The Blenheim, Ont., native made 32 saves in Friday’s 4-3 win, yielding no even strength goals and holding the high-scoring Lakers to just one goal through the first 56-plus minutes of the contest. DeBrouwer made 35 saves and had a .972 save percentage in Saturday’s 4-1 victory. He made 16 saves in the third period as Bentley was protecting a one goal lead for most of the frame.
The 24-year-old played two years in the BCHL split between the Clippers and the Spruce Kings. In 2017-18 with Prince George, he posted a .920 save percentage, a 2.24 goals-against average and three shutouts, all top-five marks in the league, and led his team all the way to the Fred Page Cup Final.
ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week
Mathieu Caron – Freshman – Brown University (Chilliwack Chiefs)
In just his second and third career NCAA starts, Caron put together the best weekend a Brown goalie has recorded since March 2009. The rookie netminder had back-to-back shutouts, making 62 saves over the course of the weekend. Most impressive was his 34-save shutout on Friday, allowing the Bears to pick up a 2-0 win over nationally-ranked Harvard.
The Abbotsford, B.C. native played four seasons with the Chiefs from 2017 to 2021, manning the crease for a total of 126 regular-season games. He wrapped up his BCHL career with 67 wins, a .905 save percentage, a 2.67 goals-against average and eight shutouts.
CCHA Goaltender of the Week
Ethan Langenegger – Sophomore – Lake Superior State University (Salmon Arm Silverbacks)
Langenegger recorded a shutout, a 1.50 goals-against average, a .953 save percentage and 61 saves over two games of action on the weekend. In Friday’s 3-0 win, he earned his second career shutout and his second in the last three games as the netminder stopped all 35 shots he faced. The Kamloops, B.C. native followed that up with a 26-save effort against the Bulldogs on Saturday night in a 3-1 loss.
The 2000-born goalie played two seasons in Salmon Arm from 2018 to 2020, suiting up for 80 games. In his final year with the team, he posted a record of 23-15-3, a .908 save percentage, a 2.79 goals-against and three shutouts.
This is his second consecutive Goaltender of the Week award.
CCHA Defenceman of the Week
Trevor Cosgrove – Graduate – Northern Michigan University (Alberni Valley Bulldogs)
Cosgrove recorded a four-point weekend against number-one nationally ranked Minnesota Duluth to lead his club to a weekend home sweep over the Bulldogs. Friday, he recorded a goal and two assists for a career-high three-point night while registering the primary assist on the Wildcats game-winning goal in the 5-4 victory. He continued his scoring ways with the lone assist on NMU’s second goal Saturday night.
The 24-year-old played the 2016-17 season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs before making the jump to college the following year. In his lone BCHL campaign, he had 16 goals and 33 assists for 49 points in 53 games to finish in a tie for third in scoring among all defencemen.
This is his second weekly award of the season.
